English & Language Arts: Writing a Homeschooling Blog

Would you like to have your own online journal to share information, experiences, thoughts, opinions, advice, and suggestions about homeschooling and your life as a homeschool parent? Then consider starting a homeschool blog. Blogging is a more recent and very popular phenomenon on the Internet.

A blog, or “web log,” is an online journal website where you can post entries as often and as long or short as you’d like. Blogs are usually subject-based and are geared toward a specific audience, and in this case, your main subject would be about homeschooling, attracting a readership of homeschool students and homeschool families or other individuals interested in homeschooling. Blogs also feature comments that allow your readers to provide feedback to a particular entry.

If you’re concerned about the fact that your writing abilities may not be “good enough,” take heart. The blogging world is fairly casual. You don’t have to be a stellar writer and your grammar and spelling need not be perfect. You do, however, need to have something to say. You need to find a voice, write in an interesting, engaging style, post often (or at least regularly), and interact with your readers through comments.

First of all, what can you write about homeschooling, the homeschool life, and your homeschooler? There are endless ideas here. You can write about the different benefits of homeschooling, the challenges of having a homeschool, how to switch from public school to homeschool, personal experiences, your children as homeschool students, opportunities for homeschool families, and curriculum issues and ideas.

Now that you have some ideas of what to write, you need to find your writing style. First, try to write the way you speak or think. Forget about being technical or trying to be a professional-be natural and relaxed, like you’re having a conversation. For example, don’t just regurgitate online research about Homeschooling, talk about your real homeschool experiences as well as thoughts and stories about your homeschooler. Also, keep your audience in mind as you write, and finally, check out other blogs about homeschool families or homeschooling to get a feel for it.

Furthermore, make sure you write in your blog regularly. You will lose your readership fast if you’re sporadic. It’s best to write as often as you can, even if you write short entries about your particular day as a homeschool parent. Posting daily or every other day is generally recommended, but if you can’t, try at least to post regularly and consistently so your readers will know when your blog will be updated.

Finally, interact with your readership. If someone comments on one of your posts about your thoughts of the homeschool life, reply with your own feedback so your readers know you are interested in their responses.

Nine Blogging Mistakes to Avoid

A lot of people get down to try and “make money from blogging” only to give it up down the line. I have listed a few of the “blogging mistakes” that they should avoid and try not falling into the trap

Not Updating Your Blog
You set up a blog and is all excited about it. For a few days, you get down to do a furry of posts and the excitement may extend to even a few weeks. And then, kaput, it is all over. The numbers of posts reduce and gradually the blog is totally forgotten.

PLEASE remember, don’t ever fall into this trap. You can even hire a person to write the blog posts for you. Just remember that nothing kills a blog faster than the lack of updates. So, once again, I request you to maintain a blog “posting frequency” and stick to it. You will thank me for it later. Try and maintain one post per day or try allocating half an hour for your blog per day. A blog that is not updated regularly is as good as a dead blog and do you want that to happen to you ?

Blogging Only For Money
A lot of people have asked me quite often whether they could “make money from blogging”; and the answer to that question is YES !!

But I have also told them that it is possible for anyone, to “make money from blogs”. But the reality is that, most people who write blogs exclusively to make money really DON’T make a lot of money.

Now why is that ??

Some of the many reasons for this is because blogging is an organized, disciplined and ongoing process and fresh content is always necessary and no sooner people forego this due to other commitments, they lose out. This is one of the reason why more that 80% if not 90% of the bloggers don’t “make money from blogging”. Also don’t think when people tell you that blogging only for money is bad. It is just that you expect results too soon and you invariably cave in and forget about it. You do this daily bit and suddenly you will be shocked to receive this check and will be thinking whether this was due to your efforts.

So, go ahead enjoy it – think of it as a part time hobby. There is also no harm if you lose your spontaneity – just have a back-up blogger or writer ready to write those posts for you.

Proofread, Proofread And Proofread
Always proofread your post prior to posting it. What I mean to say, all of us make mistakes while typing. The proof of this is the number of mistakes that you tend to make while chatting with a friend (and you take it for granted your friend on the other side understands your mistakes).

But in a blog post, you cannot overlook this mistake, you have to proofread it atleast twice, before posting it. If you write something at night, just save it and read it twice in the morning before posting. You will notice the difference.

Ofcourse, recently, there have been a number of blogs that have wantonly come out with posts that contain mistakes – but they can afford to do so. This is because, this is their USP or unique selling proposition, as they are writing for their friends. Their friends tend to understand their slangs and mistakes better than correct perfect sentences. In other words, it is slang what sells.

But this can be applied to only a small percentage of people (generally the younger generation). Besides, you also need to have a large reader base or friend base

Be Personal
This is another important aspect that you have got to remember.

Writing for a blog and writing an article are two distinct styles. Blogging is more personal. It is as if you are having a conversation with a virtual partner and not providing advise to a class or lecturing a room of students on a topic. While your knowledge of the topic would be appreciated, you lose out on the personal side – so write for your readers

But another mistake, don’t get too personal – control your language, no f’s and sh*t and other lose slang – whatever said, people respect you more without it.

This was a feedback; I received a few months back from a client when I took on writing about a product that I knew quite well, but didn’t quite fathom my reader-base.

Here goes….

1) “You’ve got to stop writing like your teaching a class. Write as if you’re actually talking to me. As if you’re talking to someone at a kitchen table. Relax and make it easy to understand. If you’re writing for an Industry magazine, it’s perfect. You’re writing for a blog. It’s got to feel like a blog. People don’t’ write blogs with hours of research, they just sit down and write. So write with casual language.

2) Start using contractions. We tend to use lots of contractions. It is = it’s, I would = I’d, Should not = shouldn’t and I have= I’ve. This will make it sound more conversational. Again make it easy to read.

3) I can’t critique the structure, because you didn’t end the article at 400 words and put an ending to it. But as far as I can tell the keywords were placed very well.

4) Your missing the point of the reader. You wrote about big companies using the product, but if you read the product description, our target market isn’t big companies. It’s small little businesses, 1 person Realtors, 5 person accountants, and 10 person contractors. You tend to be boring when you talk about big business, because the reader doesn’t care about big business. However, you can use big business as an example, but talk to the reader and tell them what’s in it for them. The small business guy, the entrepreneur, the start up business. Those people are the targets NOT big businesses that you spoke about.

5) Again your writing is really amazing, just needs to be tweaked a little.

I think you get the point !

Respond To Comments
It is very, very important and I stress that again to respond to comments – This is what brings back readers to you. Successful bloggers always interact with their readers and they try and establish a link or a connection with their readers. Once you establish a connection with your readers, they will often drop by your blog to check what you have written recently. Very important

Be Original
Again, if you find some interesting topic in some other source, say a blog or a website link – give them credit. It gives your blog a lit more value.

You don’t need that small post to ruin your reputation. You may have not realized and could have got carried away by the source – but sometimes the feedbacks could be nasty. So try and be original

I sometimes find it funny, when people say that blog posts have been copied – hey, these are two guys chatting on a topic and they would only be happy to have their topic copied, if proper credit was given to them. Say, an additional link.

This reminds me of an anecdote…

I recently took a subcontract of writing a blog-post and some articles from a guy based from who-knows-where (remember, there is no distance in the Internet). The understanding was that I give the entire rights to this bloke, which means it would be his name that would be credited under the post.

I thought what the hell, it was a small job and besides I needed some work as well.

Sometime later, I got to read this same post elsewhere, but it was totally a different person’s name that was credited with the article. I couldn’t help laughing, because here I am writing for some-one (who had been contracted by the main guy for a decent sum) and the same thing was subcontracted to me for basically peanuts and I had to worry about plagiarism

In other words, “to steal ideas from one person is plagiarism but to steal from many is research”

The story goes on – but please try and be original. Don’t have to be one of the big media shots – but write for your readers

Writing For The Searching Engines Instead Of People
People get carried away by KEI (keyword density index), key phrases, tags, keyword density, making sure that it is Google friendly and the rest of the jazz. But what they tend to forget is that it is people who would be reading their post and not search engines.

Now I am not saying that you don’t have to be worried about SEO and keyword densities, but your first priority should always be your readers.

When you proofread your post for the post for the second time, check for the keywords and their positioning and basic optimization, i.e., opening, end and the middle should be optimized well with the main keyword. That’s more than sufficient.

Not Being Passionate About Your Topic
Successful bloggers are always passionate about their topic and they also maintain a high blog posting frequency. Now if you have ten blogs and you say that you are passionate about all of them – how are you able to maintain your blog posting frequency ? Practically impossible ! So one or two blogs max with a decent degree of passion will get you more distance than 10 blogs with no passion or a zero posting frequency !

Try Giving Your Readers The RSS Facility
Now, I am not certain that this would increase your reader-base, but do it – it has helped me. Generally, people in the same line prefer to interact with each other, share ideas and help each other and the RSS facility is a big help

That’s about it – I believe I have covered most areas. So let’s get down and begin to “make money from blogging”.

7 Ways to Sabotage Your Blogging Business

The blogging business is something you should enter into only if you have a sincere passion for what you blog about. When blogging to make money it is expected that your content will be top quality in order to attract and retain the typical blog reader. Not only does the content need to be good but it also needs to be fresh. Constant updating will require the site owner to be doing quite a bit of blog posting and this will take commitment.

If your goal is to become one of the most popular blogs within your niche these efforts will have to be maintained over an extended period of time to achieve this goal. Success does not come overnight!

With all this said it is therefore prudent not to engage in actions or develop habits that may sabotage your other efforts

Here are 7 common ‘bad habits’ that many who are blogging to make money may inadvertently develop resulting in a negative impact on their income.

Stealing Content

Plagiarizing in school was frown upon and for good reason. Passing somebody’s work off as you own is unethical and unoriginal. People visit different blogs to gather varying perspectives not to look at the same identical content under a different name. In addition this will only hurt your SEO efforts by being penalized for duplicate content.

Only Blogging for Money

Maintaining a mindset that your singular purpose for blogging is to make money will eventually inhibit your efforts to be successful. Readers will detect that their interests are not your primary concern and the result will be reflected in the numbers that unsubscribe from your blog.

Blogging to make money is all well and good but you must realize that the financial rewards results only after serving your readers.

Subscribers develop a ‘giving back’ mindset after they have been treated well and this is when they make purchases from you. If you are not focused on their needs they will not reciprocate by spending any money with you.

Losing Focus

Your blog was started under the intent of focusing on a particular subject and the blog reader is attracted to this ‘type’ of information. When you drift away from your theme with content unrelated to the original subject you confuse and frustrate your readers. After a while they will unsubscribe altogether leaving you with a blog that has no direction or subscribers.

Stay on point!

Infrequent Updates

Both readers and search engines enjoy and appreciate the fact most blogs are frequently updated with new content. This is what makes blogs the darlings of the web 2.0 era. By consistently neglecting to update your site with new information the site will grow ’stale’ and both readers and search engines have no reason to visit. The result will be a drop in subscribers and search engine rank.

Hiding Your Personality

The uniqueness of every site originates from the personality or perspective of the site owner in their blog posting. This is a major contributing factor that makes your site stand apart from the rest. By being ’shy’ with your opinions or perspectives you are ‘cheating’ your readers of your insight while also ‘cheating’ yourself of the benefits you derive from your own uniqueness.

Overly Concerned About SEO

On a blog you can pretty much take the attitude to heck with the search engines insofar as how you ‘deliver’ your updates. Your main concern is winning the appeal of the blog reader and the result will be more traffic which will then empower your standings with search engines anyway.

Ignoring Comments

By failing to acknowledge comments from any blog reader that may call for a response you are in essence sending the message that their input is not important. The interactivity at a blog is another reason readers subscribe. They want to be a part of something and you are not allowing that if you ignore their comments.

The blogging business can be very rewarding in many ways for the site owner however it does take a commitment of time and effort. The primary focus is to satisfy the blog reader and this requires developing continuous quality content. For many site owners blog posting can become a daily ritual and often this is required if becoming one of the most popular blogs in your niche is the goal. By recognizing some of the more damaging bad habits any blogger can easily develop as we spoke of above it now becomes possible to avoid them. After all the time and effort invested in the maintenance of your blog it would be a shame to sabotage your results due to needless neglect and oversights.

Benefits Of Wordpress Blogging

Blogging is a sensational phenomenon taking over the Internet and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. When blogs first came into existence, they were type of online diary where the user could share opinions and views on individual subjects. Since then, the blog has exploded and taken off and are being used by companies and corporations, as websites, as marketing tools, pretty much anything you can think of.  Well there are countless numbers of different blogging sites, but the one that stands out the most, is Wordpress. Wordpress is an online blogging site that is completely changing the way people blog.

Wordpress is becoming a revolution in blogging because it takes blogs to a whole new level, also allowing users of the site to set up and manage their own blogs for free.  There are many blogging sites out there that require you to pay a fee before you can set up a blog with that site, well not Wordpress.  For added features to keep your blog on the cutting edge of modern blogs, then Wordpress does require a small fee, but the free blog is pretty good by itself.

Wordpress does not allow spam either, a lot of blogging websites do not put up a significant fight against spam. Typically, you would have to install multiple different anti-spam plug-ins before even being remotely safe from spam, well not with Wordpress. Wordpress has their own software implemented to fight the popular “comment spam.” Comment spam is when spammers leave comments on your blog that are spam related and it can really make your blog unappealing in the eyes of many, but you do not have to worry about that if you build your blog with Wordpress.

It happens all the time with blog websites, the site gets updated, leaving you having to go through the whole routine of updating your blog so that you can stay up to date. If you use Wordpress then you really do not have to worry about this issue because Wordpress does it for you. Whenever Wordpress updates their website, you do not have to do a thing because Wordpress automatically updates your blog whenever the site gets updated. Sometimes, your computer’s server can fail, making you’re a blog a little less than functional, so you have to perform back-ups of that blog everyday to make sure that it is kept safe. If you go with Wordpress then they will do the back-ups for you, so no matter what, your blog will always be safe.

With Wordpress, you are not flying blind, if you have a problem of some sort or any question that needs to be answered then it will be answered. Wordpress has a lot of members who are regularly active on the site that will help you with any problem or question that you may have; what is better than free, helpful support. Wordpress is also the place to be if you are looking to get insight on the future of blogging. This is because of Wordpress being on the cutting edge of blogging technology meaning that they try out all sorts of new features that no other blogging website does. So if you are a member of Wordpress, then you will be able to try out all of these new features absolutely free.

Probably the best part of having a Wordpress blog is the fact that it is so simple to create, manage and maintain the blog. Even a kid can start their own blog on Wordpress, which is how easy it is to get started. A lot of blogs would require at least a little knowledge in HTML, CSS or something like that, but not Wordpress because they do all the hard work for you.

Marriage Education In School?

After seeing the high divorce rates and reading the same questions on all the marriage blogs i have come to the conclusion that society needs some extra marital guidance. A perfect time would be in your senior year of high school where the teacher could be a marital counselor who can educate the kids on how to achieve a successful marriage or relationship. I took courses with a religious adviser and in college about marriage and I see a huge difference in my understanding of marriage.

I think this is especially necessary since many children are brought up in divorced households where the image of marriage has not been established for them.

Do you agree or disagree?? Could this actually save the current marriage crisis in our society?

I agree…When I was in HS the pregnancies rate was high .Well the high school gave a course on teen pregnancies.Where the student actually had to take care of a baby of course under supervision.Well by the time I was a senior the rate dropped unbelievable.

NEW EMERGING EDUCATIONAL CONCERNS

New emerging educational concerns

The rising costs of education, health care, food and shelter shall need a total transformation of the society through education. Is it possible? For 9 billion people in 2050 world we may have 30% in learning age groups ,who will need at least schooling ,college and universities for them. Fortunately ,we are leading the tally as shown Thus we have to prepare ourselves to deliver the education at the doorsteps of the learners through virtual or open universities We place here some records of world success stores in the past

CYBER UNIVERSITIES

In a lecture on Cyber universities Prof Abdul Wahid Khan said that higher education in its present form is not able to meet the challenges of equality .affordability and relevance. Conventional universities are not able to meet the demands as such we may have to plan something more for future .The knowledge resources available on web may soon convert the existing conventional universities into DINASAURES OF tomorrow. The sustainability and survivability shall demand a change which shall mean a combination of open and conventional mix; a continuous change is needed in the curriculum and the set of learning to make it more informative, interesting and knowledgeable.

VIRTUAL UNIVERSITY

Prof Didier Olio of France fortified above views by describing his rich experiences of virtual education to disabled and underprevilaged. He further said the progress of world depends on knowledge society, it is this society which develops economy and industry, so education and research cannot be and should not be ignored at any cost. WE IN INDIA HAVE YET TO FULLFILL THE PROMISE OF 6% budgetary provision for education. It is half way down 3.83% AGAINST world averaging 5%.Our educationists have take the need to the finanancing sources, we have another problem too. Against 17% universities established during preindependence period like Aligarh Muslim Uniersity,Banaras Hindu University,Jamia Milliah,Annamaile university and instate of sciences only 2% ESTABLISHMENTS CAME THROUGH INVESTMENTS AND ENDOWNMENTS POST INDEPENDENCE  ONLY. They are the Hamdard etc. Thus a post independence thaw is observed in the educational development in India, The big and small industry has been alien to research and development process of the universities.

None of the world universities thrive on their own resources except perhaps the land grant universities of USA to a limited extent.

COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION REVOLUTION

The ICT TOOLS, sites, blogs, feedback, Twitters, vedios, TV, mobile phones may now bridge the gap if proper plans are made to use them effectively. Our young people are more conversant and easy with these ways than the old –a change is needed to use learned and old to expand the horizons of skills, knowledge and information on anything or everything on mobile. It may even help us to conserve our indigenous innovation, handycraft and skills though ICT AND information webs, free web documentation is essential to be created in every state and central universities to develop a knowledge bank.

DIGITAL EDUCATION

Prof Frits Penacook of Canada says 1990 saw a beginning of digital education, It moved fast until 1998 saw it price linked and it is becoming unaffordable day by day, We have a myth in Indian culture the sarasvati and laxmi are two parallel lines do not join them both will lose their importance.Sarasvati is WANI ,VANI OR THE EDUCATION and Laximy is wealth. New links of prices web information is proving counterproductive in the sense written books can be borrowed but these web booked cannot be and hence remain beyond the reach of the true leaners,We may request scholars and teachers to provide short materials on free web to help other to know you and your work,

WEB REVIEWS AND TEACHER SELECTION

A system of web review for every teacher and student is a must. Unfortunately many vice chancellors and those in education erna do not have much to show on web. Why to ask for bio data for these positions when websites can do this analytic job for you.

MUTILINGUISH MODE OF ICT AND IT

The multilinguish transformation of internet and website have made open university more akin to culture .The language barrier overcome the ticking process, It is said one understands in mother tongue as it is known to be learned by the baby while in womb. So the whole think tank develops within womb can be best exploited when process of ticking is done in your own mother tongue. This obverse truth has been of late described through research by Kathleen Wermeke of Germany. Technology and virtual education causes more social bonding than the conventional. The low cost mobiles have made it possible to extend our agricultural and veterinary education in deep deserts of Rajasthan and leach with a similar speed as in USA or new Dedhi. What is needed an effort to bind the artisans and professionals through webs firstly to communicate and then to discuss. It can be a reality if we venture to lower don the cost of web transmissions, When we give electricity subsidies to farmers or other fertilizer etc most of which never reaches the, Make independent India vibrant an transparent through organized and cheap internet and mobile connectivity.

RESEARCH AND OUTREACH

Rapid growth of research need fast outreach. Today papers were caring two technological news on nanotechnology and artificial photosynthesis. These two new may take a second to traverse from north to south or east to west as information mechanisms is independent and can be passed on even when you do not have access to electicity.Japans new invention to manufacture  liquid fuel through artificial plants and artificial photosynthesis can relieve many industrial establishments of future extensions in their business, This information revolution is possible today perhaps  Morgan imagination vision can be broadening by our open educational establishments and conventional varsities become the dinosaurs of education sooner the latter. This shall free of our bureaucratic and political manouvering. We are at the turn of a new revolution in education where new styles, new ways and new leaders will emerge and refine the system and free it of the dusty bins filling the coffins of our universities. A growth of 314 universities, each teaching 500 students on an average may need 100 fold increase to educates our coming 3 billion populace share of 20% .A core waiting for higher education may double in next few years and may reset alarming thrust for education by2050, Let sharpen our tools of ICT and use every platform available or vacant to use the opportunity

NEW CONCEPT OF SCHOOLS SHALL EMERGE .

where

schools with due print shall be preferred over fixed mode institutions; A new system of free knowledge centres shall emerge to impart desired knowledge on a particular topic and job. Job learning shall be specified in learners attitude than acquiring knowledge without bounderiers, This shall help work culture and industry too, I have seen MVSC FIRST POSITIONERS working in banks rather be the don of a university for which he had aptitude and training.A best surgeon was forced to abandon his profession as his guide never humbled to less knowledgeable than him. A new era of self motivation and self learning will merge in India where transmigrations from one field to another shall become a reality. I saw in 1980 in Germany rush for changing disciplines during graduation from medicine to veterinary medicine or dentistry and vies versa. A holistic change on examination system is in offering in schools and it may transcend it offshoots to the higher education system in a few years time. The system will imbibe understanding of a field, discussions and lecturing on specific topics, seminars and conference as potent method of latent education make up.

By the late 19th century, educational debates were still echoing on “who was to be educated?”Visit Here http://special-online-education.blogspot.com

and “how this education was to be carried out?” Such philosophers as John Dewey and (closer to us) Jean Piaget understood that “all knowledge has a special origin and the interests of the child are the primary source of learning” (Spring 1989). The same author said that after the Civil War black leaders, particularly W.E. Dubois and Booker T. Washington debated not the importance of schooling but the kind of education for blacks. The latter, considered by many blacks as a traitor, would acquiesce with the 1895 Plessy v. Ferguson decision that said under segregation schools can be separated and remained equal. According to Perkinson (1991), Washington addressed publicly in 1895,
“….The Negro did not want social equality, that he did not need social equality with the whites. Nor did he want or need political or civil equality … but cooperation with their white friends. Negro education should be devoted to the practical education of earning a living.” P.48

But Dubois vehemently rejected that position and argued for equal rights. Meanwhile, diverse segments of society had been restless protecting their interests after the inaction of Plessy v. Ferguson. The US Supreme Court solved many cases in favor of minorities such as Peirce v. Society of sisters (1922, unconstitutionality of forcing public schooling only) or Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1940, unconstitutionality of forcing Jehovah Witness to salute the flag). None of them delivered a blow to the racist establishment more significant than Brown v. Board of Education of (1954), which stipulated that separate education was inherently unequal. That decision invigorated the position of such minority leaders as Dr. Martin L. King who had long said that the reality of equality will require extensive adjustments in the way of life of the white majority, an adjustment many are unwilling to make”, ( Smith & Chunn, 1989). The Brown decision opened the valve for a flurry of other specific legislations to right the educational wrongs done to minorities. For, Perkinson (1991) stated that black parents realized that their children were failing in schools not because they were culturally deprived but because the schools were incompetent to teach black students who, indeed, had a culture, a different culture.

I remain convinced that, on the part of many folks, it was not a matter of how to educate our culturally different children, but a deliberate case of not willing to do so. If we take, for example, Shor and Freire (1987), “It is not education which shapes society, but on the contrary, it is society that shapes education according to the interests of those who have power” p.35; and Perkinson (1991) “By 1965 the schools had polarized American society into self-satisfied whites and victimized blacks, into despondent city dwellers and indifferent suburb amenities by identifying and creating winners and losers” p.220, we shall see that these points of view (Freire/Shor’s and Perkinson’s) are in direct contradiction while both being sensitive and in the interests of the unfortunate, that include the children of the immigrants.Visit Here http://special-online-education.blogspot.com
