WordPress or Movable type?

I am a beginner in web blogging, which would you recommend? I hope someone would be willing to help me out and give me some tips

Hi,
Having used both Movable Type and WordPress, I’d have to thoroughly recommend WordPress.
It is very simple to set up, they’ve put a lot of work into making it one of THE simplest setups I’ve ever come across. You’ll need a MySQL database (> version 4.0) and PHP (> version 4.2) on wherever you’re hosting your blog so check with your provider.
There is a very large community of people using WordPress so there are many templates to change the look of your blog already written and many plugins to help your blog do more as you get more confident.
Where Movable Type lost it for me was when they started to sell out to big business and started to limit what the free personal account could do. In particular the number of authors or blogs you could host off one installation of Movable Type. Because they turned their back on their roots, a lot of people moved away from them.
WordPress is totally free, and a fantastic example of what open-source software should be like.
Hope this helps, if you need any more help let me know.

or what is a web site that i can do this?

Hi,

Yes, you want to blog. First of all you need to decide which you will use. The most popular are blogger and wordpress.org. The latter is better in my opinion as it is easier to install cool themes and the selection of themes is great.

Common Blogging Terms

Because this site is meant as a frequently asked questions site, we thought we would help out our readers by giving them a quick browse glossary of common blogging terms and words to help those who are new to blogging figure out what’s going on. Nothing is worse than trying to figure something out and not understanding any of the jargon! So, without further ado, here is the Microblog Blogging Terms FAQ:

Blog: Short for Weblog, or a list of entries that are posted in reverse chronological order, with the newest entry or “post” located at the top of the site. Blogs began as lists of links and then evolved into lists of links with explanations before becoming what they are now—a variety of types of sites that are updated regularly.

Photoblogging: A blog or weblog that consists almost entirely of photos that have been taken by the blogger. Photo blogs are a great way to launch your career as a photographer or to supplement an already existing website. Sites like Flickr make online photo storage and upload easy for photobloggers.

Captcha: is a code that a person must type in when they want to fill out a form online. Many bloggers use them in their comments section to keep spam bots from filling up their comments sections with a bunch of junk that nobody cares about.

Trackback: Blog A links to Blog B. A pinging service alerts Blog B to Blog A’s reference. This ping is called a trackback and is displayed in the comments section. It is a way for a blogger to notify another blogger of being linked to or referenced.

Widget: A piece of code that gets plugged into the coding of a blog to make certain functions easier. Widgets are often used in sidebars to display photos or links or other elements. Their job is to cut down on the amount of time it takes the blogger to change various design or content elements of the blog.

Dooced: The act of getting fired for talking about your job on your blog. Heather Armstrong the author of the uber popular blog: Dooce was among the first to be fired from her job for talking about her job on her website. Her firing was talked about all over the internet and the term “Dooced” was coined.

RSS: Really Simple Syndication. It allows blog readers to “subscribe” to a blog to be alerted to new blog posts via an automated system—either by e-mail or in a “feed” reader.

Podcast: An audio recording made that can be downloaded and played in a portable mp3 player or via a computer. A podcast feels quite a bit like a radio show and can be about any subject. Many bloggers get together to do podcasts as a supplement to blogging.

Traffic: The amount of visits a blog site sees in a day. The higher the “traffic” a blog sees, the more popular that blog is.

How do I become a better blogger?

I’ve recently launched a website www.AllAboutRealEstate.com. I’ve included a blog on the site but have no previous experience blogging. I’ve read a few general advice articles from internet giving me some do’s and don’ts of blogging but looking for more personal advice from someone that is familiar with my blog and writing style/subject. What am I doing right? Wrong? Basically can someone advise me one thing that would just totally make the difference and turn my blog from blah to awesome?

Would be curious from those answering-what is your blog experience years as well as if you are a writer and/or reader of blogs.

Thanks!

I’m working on my own blog, I’d suggest Darren’s “31 days to a better blog” mailing list at problogger.net I’m on day 19 now and I’ve seen a huge increase in traffic. The suggestions are great and the community is awesome.

Good luck!

12) blog Writing and Publishing Help in Increasing Website Rankings

The usage of blogs for marketing purposes is fast becoming the trend. Many avid blog readers have found this fact disturbing as they equate it to like commercializing Christmas. If done properly, it does not have to be that way. Besides, many blog sites are very strict at controlling the use of their sites for this purpose.

Properly trained blog writers can write keywords rich blogs tastefully. Their writings are informative, personal and interesting. They have honed their skills as blog writers to include marketing aspects, but not to the point where it becomes blatant advertising. Most often, the information that the blog writers are supplying is very beneficial to the readers.

Blog writing services are well aware of their restrictions and have no problems following the general guidelines. Blog publishing has become a very important part of marketing. It is another avenue to get the word out. Meaning, the word is what you have to offer or promote by way of product or service. It is the ideal way to generate more traffic to your site. In order to do this, though, the blog writers must ensure they are keywords rich blogs.

Many writing services on the web utilize blog writers. How successful they are depends on how professional the blog writers are. There is nothing wrong with a product owner being passionate and excited about what he has to offer. It is no different from a business owner telling interested friends and colleagues what he has to offer.

The key to blog publishing is to keep the information in the blog more on a personal interest level as opposed to a blatant advertisement. The product should be presented from a personal point of view, and not just hype material. It most certainly should be applicable to the particular topic of the blog site.

Blog writing services will often include the best locations for posting your blogs. They know the location, and with the styles and formats most used on each blog site. Proper blog publishing is the key to the success of the blog writing materials.

Blog writers know how to incorporate the link back to your sites where they will be the most beneficial. In addition, they know how to use lead up text to entice the reader to click on the link. Blog writers are masters at researching. This means they are quickly able to learn all about your service or products in no time at all. This allows them to be able to write a knowledgably informative blog article that stirs and keeps the interest of the readers.

Writing services that are worth their while must offer blog writing services. It has become a very important aspect of the writing industry. Not to be able to offer this service to customers is doing them an injustice. A customer interested in the writing field of marketing deserves the opportunity to take advantage of every marketing tool available. Blog publishing is one of these major tools.

SEO Content Lab is a company that constantly stays on top of what the most viable marketing methods bring the most success in regards to article writing. Naturally, they have opted to offer some excellent blog writing services and blog writing publishing. SEO Content Lab offers the same superior quality in the blog sector of writing as they do in all other article writing areas.

Where to find a good free information site on building a business with blogging?

I need to start a home business to help replace wages lost through hours being cut at my work. I love writing info articles and have had many articles published in print. Now I think I’d like to make money with a blog but there’s so much conflicting advice I’m confused already.

Blogging is very easy but also very hard. First thing you need to do is decided how you are going to make money off of it.
Most blogs and websites that don’t sale anything make money off of advertising space they sale on their blog. And the way they get advertisers to spend money on the ads is by having a steady flow of visitor traffic to your site.
Now that you know how to make money (on site advertising) You need to know how to set up a blog.
You will need to buy URL (domain name) and Hosting for it. GoDaddy is a popular one but personally I find it overly confusing and pushy because they always try to sale you more then what you want. I have built over 157 different blogs for work so I suggest using a company called Hostgator.com. Very reliable hosting and pricing and very easy to set up and tech support is very fast and accurate.
After your domain and hosting is set up, you need to install your blog sofware. Wordpress is the most popular right now and it is included s a script in HostGator so just ask them to install it for you and your are done. Play around with Wordpress to figure out how it works, but if you can use a Word Document editor then you can use wordpress.

As for content of your site you need to write about popular subjects in the news or right about what you know. Right product reviews, write How To and Help articles. Write often at least 3 times a week. Submit your specific post to social marketing sites like Digg and Reddit, word of mouth and get as many people you know to link to your blog and blog posts. Use specific keywords and use keyword tools like Googles to find out what words people are searching on.

Your site will start to grow in the search engines and your traffic will increase. Add Google analytics to your site to keep track of your visitor stats and traffic and be able to see which articles people like most on your site and how they found your site. Also when you are ready to sale ad space you can show clients how much traffic your site gets and exposure their ad will get daily weekly and monthly.

There is A LOT to this but this should be able to really get you started in the right direction. You can check out my personal test blog www.anythingbutcoffee.com for examples or feel free to message / email me if you want more specific answers.

Problems with my Blog (Wordpress), I need your help!
